Washer not spinning

Simple things to check first

Open and close the lid or door firmly. A front-loader will not spin if the lock has not clicked. A top-loader will not spin if the lid switch never sees the lid down. Redistribute a single heavy item — one comforter can stall a spin on many machines.

Check the cycle setting as well. Delicate or hand-wash programs often use a slow spin or almost no spin, which can leave clothes wet. If the tub is still full of water, the washer is protecting the floor. It will not spin until it drains.

Drain problems that look like a spin fault

On a front-loader, coins, lint, and small socks often sit in the pump filter at the bottom front. Unplug the machine, put towels down, and clean that filter if you are comfortable doing it. A kinked drain hose behind the box will stop the water from leaving, and the spin never starts.

If the pump hums but nothing leaves the tub, that is usually a technician visit. Many washer repairs land under $200 when the part is a lock or a pump, and you get the quote before we start.

Lid switches, belts, and a humming motor

If the machine fills and agitates but refuses to spin when the door is closed, the lid switch or door lock may have failed. That is a common Toronto condo and house call. A broken drive belt can leave the drum spinning too freely by hand. A humming motor with no drum movement on an older direct-drive washer often points to a worn coupler.

How to reset a washer that will not spin

One reset is enough to see if it was a fluke. Unplug the washer for about a minute, plug it back in, and try a drain-and-spin cycle with a balanced load. If the same fault returns, stop restarting a full tub. Standing water plus electronics is a visit, not another button press.

Do not force the door. If clothes are still sopping after a completed drain-and-spin, the machine never reached speed, and we should look at the lock, the pump, or the drive.
