Weak suction is often a tired motor, a failed capacitor, or a damper stuck in the duct — not a new hood. Over-the-range microwaves add a second question: the microwave cavity and the vent share a chassis. We tell you which half failed before we quote.
Diagnosis is applied to the repair when we complete the job. Completed work includes a 3-month service warranty. If you need a new hood or microwave hung, that is an installation booking.
Common problems we see
Fan will not start or runs on one speed only
Motors seize. Capacitors dry out. Speed switches burn. We test the switch, the capacitor, and the motor windings. A capacitor is often a same-day part. A motor may be ordered if the hood is a European chimney with a branded blower.
Weak suction even on high
Grease-caked filters, a damper that never opens, or a long flex duct crushed in the cabinet will starve the fan. We clean what is serviceable, check the damper, and tell you if the duct run is the real limit. A new motor will not fix a crushed pipe.
Rattle, grind, or a burning smell from the hood
A warped blower wheel hits the housing. A dry bearing howls. We shut the hood and inspect the wheel. If the motor is grinding, we will stop it and explain why, because that is both a noise problem and a fire concern.
Lights out — halogen, LED, or night light
Sockets corrode. LED drivers fail. We replace lamps and sockets when that is the fault and quote a driver if the LED strip is dead. Lighting is a small job unless the whole control board is gone.
Over-the-range microwave vent or turntable dead
OTR units fail at the vent motor, the door switch, or the magnetron. We separate “vent does not run” from “microwave does not heat.” A dead magnetron on an older OTR is often a replace. A vent motor or a door switch is often a repair. Installation of a new OTR is on the installation page.
What to expect on the visit
Tell us under-cabinet, chimney, island, or over-the-range microwave. A photo of the underside model sticker helps. Island hoods may need a second person or a lift — say so when you book.
We shut power at the hood or the breaker, test the motor and lights, and pull the filters. You approve the motor or capacitor price before we order a branded blower.
Cost and when to repair or replace
Motors, switches, and capacitors are commonly replaced on the visit and usually cost far less than a new hood. Diagnosis is credited on a completed repair. European blowers and OTR magnetrons are quoted from the part.
If the housing is rusted through or the microwave cavity has failed, we discuss a new hood or OTR and can book the install and the old-unit haul-away.
