Fridge making a loud noise
Has your fridge started making a new noise that was not there last week? Fridges are not silent, and a little gurgle after a defrost is usually normal. A scream from the freezer, a rattle at the back, or a compressor that clicks every few minutes is a different story.
We listen in your kitchen and separate a fan from a sealed-system talk. That way you can decide what is worth repairing before the box starts to warm.
What is usually normal
Gurgles after a defrost, ice falling into a bin, and a fan that changes pitch when the door closes are common. Those sounds are not a failed compressor. They come and go with the cycle.
A click every few seconds on a dead start is not normal. Unplug the fridge if it keeps hammering so the compressor does not fail harder. Move the food if the box is already warming.
Fans versus the compressor
An evaporator fan in the freezer howls when the blade hits ice or the motor is worn. A condenser fan at the bottom rear rattles when lint binds it. Both are common repairs and usually a worthwhile investment, because the fridge can still be cooling while the fan is dying.
A compressor that cannot start is the replace conversation on an older cabinet. If the quote on a unit older than 12 to 15 years climbs toward $700, we talk replacement in your kitchen.
Ice makers and when to call
A failing ice maker can sound like the fridge is dying. We isolate that noise before anyone talks about cooling parts. You get a quote for the ice maker on its own if food temperature is fine.
