Is there a puddle in front of your fridge, or water pooling under the crisper drawers? Many homeowners in Toronto notice it when the kitchen floor is already slippery. A leaking refrigerator is usually a blocked defrost drain, a cracked drain pan, or a water-line fitting — not a compressor you have to replace tonight.

One of the first things to do is notice where the water is coming from. Inside the box, under the produce drawer, or behind the fridge are three different jobs. Then we find which water and quote before we start.

Why a fridge keeps leaking water underneath

A blocked defrost drain is the most common cause. During a defrost cycle, melt water should run to a pan and evaporate. When food bits or ice block that path, water overflows into the kitchen after a heavy frost cycle.

A damaged door seal lets moist air in, which makes more frost and more overflow. If you have an ice maker or dispenser, a loose filter housing or a cracked supply line is pressurized water. That will not wait, and it is a different urgency than a clogged drain.

What you can check safely

Look at the water-filter housing and the line behind the box if you have an ice maker. A loose fitting drips while the fridge still cools. Empty the drip tray if your model has one you can reach. Do not chip ice out of a freezer drain with a knife.

If water is only inside, under the crispers, the defrost drain is the first suspect. If the floor is wet and the ice maker is off, the supply line or the drain pan is more likely. Move food if the floor is spreading.

When the leak is more than a drain

A sealed-system leak is rare, and we will not guess it from a puddle photo. If cooling is also failing and the quote on an older unit climbs toward $700, we talk replacement in your kitchen. A leak plus a warm box is a same-day food problem.
