Is it better to repair or replace an appliance?

It depends on the part, the cabinet, and what a similar new unit would cost. A drain pump, door lock, igniter, bake element, fan, or thermostat on a sound machine is usually a worthwhile repair. Many washer repairs land under $200. Dishwasher work often falls between $150 and $300, and those jobs often finish the same day when the part is on the truck.

The picture changes when the quote sits close to a new fridge, oven, or washer. Age matters, but it is not the only factor. A four-year-old oven quoted like a replacement is a different conversation than a twelve-year-old fridge that only needs a fan.

The 50 percent rule — and when we ignore it

People often ask about the 50 percent rule: if the repair costs more than half of a new appliance, replace it. That can be a helpful starting point, because it keeps you from paying twice. It is not a law, and it does not work the same way on every machine.

A small part on a well-kept washer can be well under half of replacement and still be the right choice for your home. A sealed-system quote around $700 on a refrigerator older than 12 to 15 years is usually the point we talk replacement, even if someone online used a different percentage. We would rather you decide with the numbers in the room than with a formula on the phone.

Is it worth repairing a 20-year-old appliance?

Sometimes yes. A 20-year-old washer that needs a pump can still be a short, honest job if the tub and cabinet are sound. A 20-year-old fridge that needs a compressor or a sealed system is usually not, because the next failure is often close behind.

Washers and dishwashers often last about 9 to 12 years in regular family use. Refrigerators often last longer if the sealed system stays healthy. If the cabinet is rusted, or this is the second major failure in a year, replacement is usually the right choice for your home.

How many repair attempts are enough?

One diagnosis and one completed repair should hold. If the same fault returns inside the 3-month service warranty, we come back on that work. Two paid visits on the same fault without a lasting fix is usually the point to stop.

Ask for the failed part named on the quote. A vague “we tried something” is not a diagnosis. If you decline after we find the fault, the diagnostic visit is billed. If we complete the repair, diagnosis is applied to the job.
