Reasons why a fridge is not cold enough
A warm fridge is a food-safety problem. Before you assume the compressor is dead, check power, the thermostat, blocked freezer vents, and dirty condenser coils. If the evaporator fan is silent with the door switch held, or the fridge is warm after those checks, book refrigerator repair the same day.
Power and thermostat
A cord that has worked loose, a tripped breaker, or a thermostat rolled to off will make a fridge look dead. Set a normal temperature and wait. If the compressor never starts, that is a service call, not a setting.
Blocked air vents
A packed freezer blocks the vents that feed the fresh-food section. The freezer may still feel cold while the fridge is warm. Reorganize so the vents can blow.
Dirty condenser coils
Dust and pet hair on coils under or behind the fridge choke heat rejection. The compressor runs constantly and still cannot keep up. Unplug and vacuum the coils.
Evaporator fan
The evaporator fan moves cold air from the coil. Hold the door switch; the fan should start. If it is silent or screaming, the fan is the repair. Ice on the coil with a dead fan often means a defrost fault as well.
Condenser fan
The condenser fan sits at the back or bottom and cools the compressor. If it is seized or the blades are packed with dust, the fridge will not hold temperature. Unplug before you inspect it.
When it is a sealed-system job
If fans and coils are fine and the compressor clicks or will not start, you are in sealed-system territory. We quote that against replacement. On many fridges older than about 12–15 years, an estimate over about $700 is the point we talk about a new unit.
Still throwing the code? Refrigerator repair.
